Social Media engulfed relationships -Shame!

Social media has eaten deep into our lives like canker-worms that many of us forget to do something as effective and significant as ‘calling’. I am aware that social media drives businesses and all of those marketing strategy 101s.  But it is of uttermost importance that we do not neglect the place of effective communication in our relationships. By this, i mean actually talking !

Many emotions are revealed when you talk (not chat) to/with someone (even if it’s through a device) rather than just typing in short hand, many of which are ridiculous these days… Many relationships begin and end on social media . The smileys and emojis laugh,  cry, roll eyes, and get angry for you.  You ask her on a date via WhatsApp, fight and settle on BBM.

I can totally relate to this issue because i was once in a relationship where about 95% of our communication were via BBM chats asides when we saw face to face.  I had a boyfriend who would not call at all in months (except for emergencies)  with the excuse that he just wasn’t used to calling. At some point, i started to get irritated by the whole social media chats. I started to feel i talked more and better with my friends than with my supposed boyfriend. The long and short of it – we’ve broken up and this was one of the major issues that led to it. And yes…the relationship began and ended on social media. Shame!

We have become so comfortable with the virtual rather than actual. Even these social media platforms have voice and video calls incorporated. Only a few remember to use them. And so, issues like- ‘you read my chat, you didn’t reply….. Oh sorry i was so tired,  i forgot….’ come up.

I have a friend that just prefers to send a voice note no matter how short the message is (especially when she’s busy) .  So you’re just typing away and she’s just replying you with voice notes….and you’re like…i should really try using this voice note o…

Even if you can’t call your friends, i think it is absolutely important you do in any serious relationship. And this question as to how many times should you call your spouse, girlfriend or boyfriend in a day?  I say as many times as you can and are able to (note that i said in a day not week or month).

Let’s not be carried away by this thing called ‘social media’. Let’s do the right things people….

O.O.O
